Sung Sot Cave – The Cave of Surprises

Sung Sot Cave is one of the largest and most famous caves in Halong Bay. It is located on Bo Hon Island, about 25 meters above sea level. The cave was first discovered by French explorers in 1901. They were so amazed by its size that they named it “Grotte des Surprises,” which means “Cave of Surprises.”

The path to the cave starts with a climb of around 100 stone steps through trees and rocks. The walk is not too long and takes about 10–15 minutes. At the top, the entrance looks small, but once inside, the space is huge. The whole cave covers about 10,000 square meters, with high ceilings up to 30 meters.

Sung Sot Cave has two main chambers. The first one is like a small hall. It is often called the “waiting room.” From there, visitors move to the second chamber, which is much larger. This chamber can fit thousands of people at one time. The walls and ceilings are filled with stalactites and stalagmites that have formed over millions of years. Some rocks look like animals such as lions, elephants, or turtles. Others look like everyday objects, which is why the cave is so interesting to explore.

There are also local legends about the cave. Some stories say the strange shapes were left by heroes or gods. These legends add cultural meaning to the natural beauty of the cave.

When traveling with Aime’e Cruises, guests visit Sung Sot Cave in the morning. This is the best time because the cave is cooler, the light is softer, and there are fewer visitors. The walk inside takes about 45 minutes. Paths are paved and well lit, so it is safe and easy to follow. Comfortable shoes and a camera are recommended.
